LOCSS Explores Expanding to Spain!

Antonio Guillem, Tamlin Pavelsky, and Sonia Monferrer at the Torreblanca wetland near Valencia, Spain
The LOCSS team recently travelled to Valencia to explore expanding to the region.

The team is excited to have been recently put in touch with colleagues at the NGO Fundación Global Nature (FGN) in the Spanish city of Valencia by our colleague Sandra Escobar. FGN manages a number of coastal wetlands that contain open water areas, and they are interested in partnering with us to install LOCSS gauges in some of these wetlands and to incorporate satellite measurements to better understand the hydrology of these environments. The wetlands are located at (from south to north) El Moro, Almenara, and Torreblanco. Tamlin Pavelsky, LOCSS Project Lead, recently visited for two days, and FGN representative Antonio Guillem showed he and Sandra around the sites. We hope to have gauges installed soon, adding our eleventh overall country to LOCSS and our second in Europe (after our long-time partnership working in the French Pyrenees). We’ll keep you posted about when the gauges are available. If you decide to go on a Spanish beach vacation, you can add some citizen science to the mix!
